Journey
DJ Tira, born Mthokozisi Khathi, is an iconic South African DJ, producer, and entrepreneur whose influence has shaped the trajectory of African dance music for over two decades. Emerging from the township of KwaHlabisa, Tira moved to Durban to pursue a degree in Human Resources, but his true calling was found behind the turntables in 1996.
His professional breakthrough arrived in 2000 when he clinched first place in the Smirnoff SA DJ Knockout competition. This victory catalyzed the "Durban's Finest" era, where he and DJ Sox redefined the compilation market. In 2007, he established Afrotainment, a record label that would become a powerhouse for regional talent. Under his guidance, groups like Big Nuz achieved superstardom, fueled by Tira’s signature production style.
Tira’s discography is a testament to his longevity. He has dominated airwaves with massive releases such as "Uthando," "Thank You Mr DJ," and the high-energy "Ezase Afro." His 2021 project, "Rockstar Forever," further solidified his status as a "kingmaker" in the industry. Known as "Makoya Bearings," his impact extends beyond music; he is the visionary behind the "Fact Durban Rocks" concert series, which attracts tens of thousands of fans annually.
Tira remains at the forefront of the industry, recently releasing the "Welcome to Durban" EP to critical acclaim. His ability to adapt from Kwaito to Gqom and into the Afro-tech space ensures his relevance. Married to Gugu Khathi and a father of three, DJ Tira continues to balance family life with a sprawling business empire that defines the heartbeat of Durban.
